Don’t Get Hooked! Real Emails, Real Lessons from UBC’s Cybersecurity Team

Think you’d never fall for a phishing email? Some of the messages hitting UBC inboxes lately have fooled even the savviest among us, with convincing logos, familiar names, and just enough urgency to make you click before thinking twice.

In our Monthly Phishing Workshops, UBC cybersecurity experts walk attendees through real phishing emails that have recently targeted members of the university community. These aren’t theoretical examples—they’re timely, relevant, and often shockingly subtle. Every month brings new tactics, and our workshops are designed to help you stay one step ahead.

Workshop Video Highlights

Curious what to expect? Watch the video highlights from a recent session to get a taste of what we cover. You’ll see how:

  • Cyber criminals spoof UBC addresses from overseas locations
  • Logos and legal-sounding language are used to fake legitimacy
  • Compromised accounts are weaponized to trick colleagues
  • Generic greetings and vague subject lines mask real threats

Each workshop features fresh examples of phishing emails circulating around UBC at that time. You’ll leave with practical takeaways you can apply immediately, like:

  • How to spot suspicious sender behaviour
  • How to verify document-sharing requests
  • When and how to report a suspicious message
