Last updated: January 31, 2025
Data Privacy Week 2025 Recap

Another incredible Data Privacy Week has wrapped up at UBC, and what a week it was! From thought-provoking discussions to expert insights, our events engaged, informed, and inspired the UBC community to take privacy seriously in an increasingly digital world.

Data Privacy Week is a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of protecting personal information. Held during the last week of January, this annual event commemorates the signing of the 1981 Convention 108—the first legally binding international treaty on privacy and data protection. At UBC, we take this opportunity to spotlight key privacy topics that impact our community and beyond.

Event Highlights

Enhancing Privacy Compliance Awareness Among Researchers

We kicked off the week with an insightful session featuring members of Advanced Research Computing (ARC), Privacy & Information Security Management Safety & Risk Services (PrISM SRS), and the Office of Research Ethics. Attendees gained practical strategies to ensure their research is conducted with integrity and compliance. The panel shared best practices, real-world scenarios, and expert guidance, leaving researchers equipped with the knowledge they need to navigate privacy regulations effectively.

What Does "Public Data" Really Mean?

This session was a deep dive into one of the most pressing issues in data privacy today—the ethical and legal implications of data scraping. With AI and machine learning relying heavily on vast amounts of data, the conversation explored what it truly means for data to be "public." The discussion challenged common assumptions, encouraged critical thinking, and provided valuable insights into the complex interplay between research, AI development, and privacy law.

What’s New in Privacy at UBC?

Closing out the week, this highly anticipated session featured experts from University Counsel and the PrISM SRS team unveiling the latest developments in UBC’s privacy landscape. Attendees got an inside look at emerging privacy policies, compliance updates, and the university’s ongoing commitment to data protection. The event was also a great opportunity for participants to engage directly with privacy experts and learn how these changes impact them.

Looking Ahead

The success of Data Privacy Week 2025 underscores the growing awareness and commitment to privacy at UBC. With a record number of participants, dynamic discussions, and actionable takeaways, it’s clear that privacy is a priority for our community.

A huge thank you to all our speakers, panellists, and attendees who made this week so impactful! If you missed any of the sessions they are now available to stream from our Privacy Matters On Demand page.

Until next year—stay informed, stay secure, and keep privacy at the forefront!
