Don't Get Locked Out: Update Your MFA Account After Getting a New Device!

The holidays are a time for giving, and sometimes those gifts come in the form of shiny new phones or tablets! But before you dive into exploring all the features of your new device, there's one crucial step you need to take to ensure your UBC accounts remain secure: updating your Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) device preference.

Take Action:

Transferring MFA to Your New Device (if the existing device is available):

  1. Navigate to: https://mfadevices.id.ubc.ca/
  2. Utilize Your Old Device: Approve the verification prompt using the Duo Mobile app installed on your old device.
  3. Verification Options for New Device (if applicable):
    • Retaining Phone Number: Select "Call Me" on your new phone to receive the verification code instead of using the old phone's app (faculty and staff only).
    • New Phone Number: Simply register your new phone as an additional MFA device.
  4. Post-Verification: Enhance security by removing your old device from your account.

Still Need Help?

No problem! If you can't access your old device or have any issues with the transfer process, the IT Service Centre is here to assist you. After validating your identity, they will either issue you a bypass code to be able to register your new device and/or walk you through associating your new device with your account.

What is MFA and Why is it Important?

Imagine your UBC account as a treasure chest filled with important information. A regular password acts like a key to unlock the chest. However, with just a password, someone could potentially guess their way in. This is where MFA comes in! It adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second verification code after you enter your password. This code is typically sent to your registered phone number, acting like a secret handshake that confirms it's really you trying to access the account.

Updating Your MFA Device Preference

Now, let's say you get a brand-new phone. If your UBC MFA preference is still linked to your old phone, you won't receive the verification code when you try to log in with your new device. This can leave you locked out of your important UBC accounts!

By taking just a few minutes to update your MFA device preference, you'll ensure a smooth and secure login experience on your new device. With this crucial step taken, you can get back to enjoying your new gadget and all the possibilities it brings!

Remember, staying vigilant can protect you from cybercrime. By following these tips and updating your MFA, you can keep your UBC accounts secure and enjoy a worry-free holiday season!
