Updating Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Device

Recently acquired a new mobile device? To ensure continued secure access to your UBC accounts, updating your Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) account is crucial before disposing of your old phone or tablet.

Understanding MFA and Its Importance

MFA introduces an additional security layer to your UBC login process. Imagine a double lock on your door; both your username/password (the first key) and a verification code from your phone (the second key) are required for entry.

Why is it important to update your MFA before getting rid of your old device?

  • Security Risk: Once you dispose of your old device, the verification codes associated with it become useless, leaving your account vulnerable to potential attacks.
  • Account Access: Failing to update your MFA account before disposing of your old device could hinder your ability to access your UBC accounts, especially in emergencies.

Transferring MFA to Your New Device (if the existing device is available):

  1. Navigate to: https://mfadevices.id.ubc.ca/
  2. Utilize Your Old Device: Approve the verification prompt using the Duo Mobile app installed on your old device.
  3. Verification Options for New Device (if applicable):
    • Retaining Phone Number: Select "Call Me" on your new phone to receive the verification code instead of using the old phone's app (faculty and staff only).
    • New Phone Number: Simply register your new phone as an additional MFA device.
  4. Post-Verification: Enhance security by removing your old device from your account.

Why Transfer Instead of Starting Fresh?

While contacting the IT Service Centre is always an option if you can't access your old device, transferring the MFA connection is faster and more secure. Here's why:

  • Avoid the Wait: Transferring takes minutes while contacting the IT Service Centre might involve verification and potential delays.
  • Stay Secure: By removing your old device from your account, you ensure no unauthorized access through the old device.

Still Need Help?

No problem! If you can't access your old device or have any issues with the transfer process, the IT Service Centre is here to assist you. After validating your identity, they will either issue you a bypass code to be able to register your new device and/or walk you through associating your new device with your account.

Remember, updating your MFA account before getting rid of your old device is a crucial step for maintaining the security of your UBC accounts. By following these straightforward steps, you can ensure uninterrupted access and protect your account information.
