Balancing Act: Freedom of Information, Privacy, and Accountability

Balancing Act: Freedom of Information, Privacy, and Accountability

January 12, 2024

Freedom of Information (FOI) laws grant access to public records held by government agencies, public institutions, and universities. While FOI is crucial for transparency and accountability, it can intersect with privacy concerns for faculty, staff, and students at UBC. We discussed why it is essential to be aware of UBC’s FOI policies, understand your rights regarding the disclosure of personal information, and where to seek guidance or support if you have concerns about the potential privacy implications of FOI requests. The Office of the University Counsel offers FOI and Privacy Training sessions. For more information or to set up training for your office, please contact access.and.privacy@ubc.ca.
