UBC Vancouver Network Security Upgrade

October 24, 2018

On Thursday, November 1st, 2018, new network security upgrades at the Vancouver campus will add a layer of protection from malicious, high-risk websites that may jeopardize the university network. The upgrade is applicable to UBC wired connections and “ubcsecure” wireless.

After the upgrade, if you’re on a UBC network and accidentally click on a link to a high-risk website, your browser will redirect you to a block page. For example, if you receive a phishing email with a link to a fraudulent website and accidentally click on it, you will see the block page.

Please note: This process is automatic and the university is not acting as a censor.  This service will not track individual user website activity.

The system has been in ‘Audit mode’ at the Vancouver campus since May 10th, and in ‘Block mode’ at UBC Okanagan since March 23, 2018.
