Larry Carson appointed Chief Information Security Officer

Larry Carson has been appointed as UBC’s new Chief Information Security Officer, effective January 1, 2026.

Larry will lead the cybersecurity team in improving UBC's cybersecurity maturity and risk profile to ensure UBC's data and infrastructure remain secure. This is an important leadership role for the university. With more than 25 years of experience, Larry brings a long history of service to UBC and a deep understanding of our community. He has worked directly with many faculty, staff, and students to help keep UBC’s systems secure, lead incident response and prevention efforts, develop security standards, and advance the responsible use of AI and automation in cybersecurity operations.

Throughout his career at UBC, Larry has focused on strengthening UBC’s cybersecurity capabilities. He has built strong relationships across the BC and Canadian higher education sectors, as well as within the broader cybersecurity community. He has been an integral part of our Privacy and Information Security Management initiatives, overseeing the growth of the Security Operations Centre and supporting the deployment of many of our cybersecurity capabilities.

Larry’s experience and collaborative approach will position UBC’s cybersecurity portfolio to continue enabling excellence, resilience, and innovation at UBC and across the post‑secondary sector.
