UBC’s Information Security Standards (ISS) are updated annually to protect data and university operations from evolving cyber threats. Whether you work with data, manage IT systems, or simply use email in your day-to-day work, these standards affect all of us.

To support awareness, understanding, and compliance, we are hosting two virtual information sessions highlighting recent key changes to the ISS, with a focus on the development of a Shared Responsibility Model (SRM). The SRM provides a clear framework for defining which teams or individuals are responsible for specific technical tasks required to operate, manage, and secure UBC's data. This model helps clarify accountability and ensure a consistent approach across the institution.

Join us for an information session to learn about the benefits and uses of a Shared Responsibility Model and when to use it.

Session Details:

  • When:
    • Wednesday, April 29, 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM
    • Tuesday, May 5, 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
  • Where: Online via Zoom
  • Audience: Open to all UBC faculty and staff, particularly anyone involved in the procurement, assessment, delivery, operation and maintenance of UBC Electronic Services.
  • Registration: Required for attendance

What you can expect:

  • An overview of why the Shared Responsibility Model is being implemented, including its benefits and scope.
  • How the Shared Responsibility Model aligns with existing and future operational and governance processes (e.g. service design, procurement processes).
  • A clear explanation of Shared Responsibility Model requirements outlined in Information Security Standard U1.
  • Practical guidance and instructions for applying the Shared Responsibility Model in daily work.
  • Real-world case studies illustrating how the Shared Responsibility Model works in practice.
    • April 29 case study: UBC Hybrid Cloud and Tines Security Automation
    • May 5 case study: Research Remote Sensing

Each session will cover different case studies while covering the same core content. Join the session that is most convenient for you or attend both to support your understanding of the ISS standards.

Don’t miss the opportunity to ask questions during a live Q&A and engage directly with information security experts.

Together, let's ensure we have the knowledge and tools to protect UBC’s information assets.

Session recordings will be made available on the Privacy Matters On Demand webpage.
