March 31 is World Backup Day

March 28, 2017

What would you do if you lost everything? On March 31, celebrate World Backup Day. With so much of our lives, photos, and videos being stored in digital form, it is important that we make backups of our precious data. If anything happened to your phone, computer or table, your important documents and memories could be lost forever.

Backing up your data is one of those easy-to-do procedures that many people ignore. Backups are copies of your information that are stored somewhere else. When you lose important data, you can recover that data from your backups.

You can choose to either backup specific data that is important to you, or everything, including your entire operating system. If you are not sure what to back up, then it is recommended that you backup everything.

There are two main ways to back up your data: physical media or Cloud-based storage. Physical media can include DVDs, USB drives or external hard drives. Whichever method you choose, never back up your files to the device that holds the original files.

Alternatively, you can store your backup files in a Cloud-based solution. This is a service where your files are stored somewhere on the internet. You can try UBC Workspace, which provides space for backing up work related files that are important to you.

If you already have a backup procedure in place, consider checking your backup restores on World Backup Day to see if they are still performing correctly. After all, a backup plan that doesn’t work isn’t much of a backup plan.
